The warm weather came to an abrupt halt last night (Monday) after torrential downpours, and thunderstorms saw more than 50mm of rain fall on some parts of the Island.
Figures released by IW Met Service show East Cowes recorded the highest rainfall total with a huge 52.83mm measured overnight into Tuesday morning.
Nearby Gurnard saw 47.62mm of rain fall, while Osborne recorded 39.12mm. Cowes and Thorness also experienced significant downpours with totals of 38.12mm and 38.10mm respectively.
The heavy rainfall came after forecasters warned that intense showers, thunderstorms and flash flooding could affect around 75% of the Isle of Wight between 22:00 and 05:00.
Northern parts of the Island appeared to be worst affected, although rainfall totals of between 15mm and 30mm were recorded across many other areas.
The sudden change in weather followed several days of warm sunshine and high temperatures which had seen beaches packed with visitors across the Island.
IW Met Service had warned residents in flood-prone areas to prepare for possible flash flooding, with concerns also raised about debris, shingle and standing water affecting roads overnight.

I know where you are coming from, but we have had extreme heat and the ground is extremely dry and hard, a large amount of rain after a very dry hot May is news worthy, further more such rain on parched dry land can have a major affect on some peoples lives.
This was not a bit of rain and the total rain was more in a few hrs than we had all of MAY. But you made your point, in different circumstances it was not a big news story.
It is very news worthy. With the adhoc climate change, it will cause flooding and disruption, the already poor state of the roads will be impacted with gravel from pot holes washed out, providing aggregate, breaking up the surfaces even further and then drains not being maintained/cleared.. it’s news worthy because it will create further disruption to travel and more.
