The tier system could come back into place after the lockdown and top council officials are urging the Isle of Wight to comply so it can remain at the lowest restriction levels.
Before the second national lockdown was enforced last week, local authorities had been placed into a tier system with different levels of restrictions for different areas.
The 3 tier system saw tougher restrictions on areas were cases were more prevalent, so the Island remained in the lowest category adhering to social distancing measures and also the rule of six, which meant cafes, restaurants and pubs, as well as hairdressers, barbers, and other non-essential shops could remain open.
Looking to the end of lockdown, chief executive of the Isle of Wight Council, John Metcalfe, has been reiterating the need for the Island’s residents to stick to guidance so it can remain likely we slot back into tier 1, the least restrictive tier.
Speaking at the second public meeting of the Local Outbreak Engagement Board yesterday (Thursday), he said:
“I very much hope the results of the lockdown mean we as an Island come back out in tier one as it will give us the freedoms and flexibility to enjoy the things we had before the lockdown and not subject us to restrictions that were applied elsewhere.
“But we will only do that if as a community we make the best of this period in time now to follow all the rules and the guidance and make sure we can come out at tier one.”
Assistant chief executive, Wendy Perera, said it was made very clear by health bosses that we are still dealing with the second wave, and while there is additional testing and a vaccine coming forward there are still things we can do to keep ourselves and the communities safe. She said:
“Some of the things we can do to ensure we retain those freedoms is to continue with the good work the community is doing and really think about how we are mixing with our friends and colleagues outside our homes as it is those sort of situations, mixing households and mixing socially, we need to be concerned about in terms of community spreading.”
The national lockdown is supposed to end on 2nd December, with Boris Johnson promising it will end on that date as planned.

It might be a good thing to look at the amount of people coming over to thier weekekend houses at Seaview they are running their own ferry service via the ridged inflatatables
Did they speak English, and were most heavily pregnant? Just wondering if they were home owners OR home takers.
With the rate of infections and the number of ACTUAL cases, we will be lucky if we don’t go into tier 3. Of course the shredders at county hall and the hospital will be working overtime to try and hide the TRUE number of infections.
I shall continue to wear my mask (even though it does practically nothing) and respect the 2m distancing and household mixing rules (even though I know they are just numbers plucked out of the air) because it might just help in some way.
I don’t, however, think I can believe anything that comes out of Westminster.
Particularly any promises from the man who lied to the nation and used statistics he knew were incorrect to justify the current lockdown.
Need to do something about the ever increasing number of cases in schools because the current restrictions do nothing to control them so come December we will still have a large pool of infection
The Chief exec and deputy exec should look at the comments they have made and then ask themselves WHY are schools still open when that is the single largest community mixing of households on the island, and whats worse from all stats the school age population has the most asymptomatic carriers of Covid-19, that would suggest the cases confirmed in schools is just the tip of the iceberg of those actually infected. No surprise then that 40% of recent cases are of the age group that are the parents of school kids. As the major executives (MAKE AN EXECUTIVE DECISION – CLOSE THE SCHOOLS) or we will exit lockdown in a worse situation than we entered and end up in tier 3
Well said 17yrs to 25 yrs just don’t give a sh t
People on here want everyone and everything locked down forever,we can’t live like that for a virus with over 99% cure rate most having mild or no symptoms. If people didn’t keep being tested no one would even know and life could go on as normal. There are colds and flus every year at this time, always has been but we never had to lockdown before. There are no more deaths this year than last year so there can’t be a pandemic as there would be thousands more. The reason it seems more is because every death is put as covid to keep the figures and fear up.The government admitted shockingly on October 9th that the tests don’t work and any cold or virus shows up as covid positive. The carnage this government has caused with unnecessary lockdowns is equal to murder with raised suicides untreated and undiagnosed cancers, hospitals shut but empty, doctors shut for 9 months,it is disgusting. The job losses and businesses ruined, all for a coronavirus that the average death rate less than 1% of it is age 82 and the average death rate normally is 80!!!!
Polly
At last someone talking sense
Should remain in lockdown untill the virus is in decline.
Oh sorry it’s a case of money above our lives
The economy over time can recover but the poor souls who have lost their lives & without doubt more will not recover!
Has Boris got crystal balls to be able to forcast the future?
He has not got it right yet!
Truth is immutable whether we believe it or not but lies depend on us believing them.
