Letter to the editor – 9th January 2025
“I hear everything about how bad the NHS is how about a positive tale.
“Six weeks ago I had a stroke and was paralysed down my right side. 999 was called, and an ambulance crew arrived within a few minutes. I was taken to hospital in 15 minutes, A&E were informed and when I arrived they scanned me straight away.
“Within a short time I was given a clot busting drug and an hour or so later feeling was returning.
“In the stroke unit I was looked after by a fabulous team. I was there for about a week but I am at home now recovering.
“The whole stroke team saved my life and I will be forever grateful.

That is the best good news story I’ve heard so far in 2025, I hope you are doing ok, take care of yourself, Well done to the stroke team. X
I’m so glad you are recovering Jenny S
Great news, you are one of the lucky ones.
Entering the NHS is like a lottery, it depends who
is on shift at the time re the care you receive.
“Some Doctors and Nurses are better than others”
FACT
Stay safe and enjoy living.
Seems to me funding goes in at the top with not nearly filtering down to hands-on staff… how many lives are saved by those in plush offices; who’d you sooner be treated by… a trained medic or some-one with a clip board…
Well done to you and the stroke team. Like you I was admitted to St Marys last year following 2 strokes (one of which I ignored… typical man), the first one took away a lot of my short term memory and the second took away my speech. Despite A&E looking like a Beirut hospital I was straight into a scan and within minutes my stroke nurse was able to tell me that I had had a Stroke and kept me very calm as my speech returned over the following hours. Despite no major long term effects I have still got some issues but I know that the stroke team are always available if things get worse.
St Marys definitely have some serious issues, but the Stroke team are at least one department that does exactly what it says on the tin.
