The Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society (RIWAS) welcomed over 600 children from 22 Island primary schools to the County Showground earlier this month for a hands-on Education Day ahead of this year’s Royal Isle of Wight County Show on 11th and 12th July.
A total of 24 different areas of the upcoming County Show were represented, offering children the chance to ‘get up close’ to everything from pigs and sheep to equine, arts, and sport.
Pupils took part in interactive demonstrations, asked questions, handled animals, and of course, enjoyed a classic tractor and trailer ride to the woodland area — a definite highlight!
Graham Biss, County Show Chairman, said:
“We were delighted to give the children a fun but informative day. The real stars, as always, were the animals — it was wonderful to see the excitement and interest on the children’s faces. A heartfelt thank you to the County Show team of volunteers whose commitment and support helped to make the day such a memorable success.”
Karen Horton from St Saviours Primary School shared:
“This year’s Education Day was another fantastic event and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity. The children had an amazing time learning about the farming industry on the Isle of Wight and gaining a better understanding of where food comes from, animal care, and the importance of agriculture in our local community. One of the highlights of the day was the woodland walk, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. They loved exploring nature and taking part in the activities throughout the day!”

Following the success of this year’s event, RIWAS is already planning to grow the Education Day even further in 2027, with the next one set to take place on Tuesday, 18th May 2027.
