Fruit and veg will remain on the menu in Ryde as Mellish’s is to takeover the much-missed Barrow Boys premesis on the High Street.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Barrow Boys announced its closure in January after proprietor Leslie Schaverien chose to retire.
Now, Island Echo can exclusively reveal that Mellish’s will take over the site and continue to operate it as a greengrocer, in addition to the convenience store and Post Office on it’s current premises across the road.
It has not yet been confirmed what the shop might be called but Mellish’s have confirmed that it will be re-opening ‘soon’. It’s been suggested that it may be called ‘The Veg Cart’.
Barrow Boys initially opened in Sandown, before moving to the former Gilham greengrocer premises in Ryde. With business booming the shop expanded into next door – the former Charlie’s/Hamilton’s butchers. In 2017, an online shop was launched to allow for Island-wide orders to be made and delivered. However, after the pandemic it was suggested by the firm that shoppers were flocking back to the supermarkets.
With many supermarkets now struggling to source sufficient fruit and vegetables, the news will be welcomed by Ryde residents who will also not have to walk past yet another long vacant shop on the High Street.

good luck with your venture, bring back proper little shops with good customer service
Nice to see new businesses sprouting up.
Unknown where they get their information from, Myself and most people I know would not order veg on line.. as one does not get to choose what they are getting, is it over ripe, or rotten.. Or maybe will be by time it arrives, if they deliver the right goods to start with..
