Around 60 players took part in a weekend-long Isle of Wight versus Southampton table tennis challenge at Smallbrook earlier this month.
The Isle of Wight Table Tennis Association was pleased to host Southampton West Table Tennis Club at the Isle of Wight Table Tennis Centre between 15th and 17th May.
There were 3 long sessions of table tennis played each day, with players competing across a variety of formats throughout the weekend.
The Friday and Sunday sessions were played in group format, with 8 groups competing at different levels and points awarded for each leg won.
Saturday’s action featured a knockout singles competition alongside a consolation event, again with points awarded for every leg won.
The singles semi-finalists were Islanders Ryan Cates, Alex Rorke and Danny Burns, alongside Southampton player James Wright.
Rorke and Wright progressed to the final, with Wright emerging victorious to claim the singles title.
At the end of the weekend, Southampton West narrowly came out on top overall, winning by just 10 points.
The event was hailed a success by organisers, with the visiting Southampton players praising both the facilities at the Smallbrook venue and the warm welcome they received.
Local players also enjoyed the opportunity to compete against different opponents in what was described as a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the weekend.
