Traffic heading to Wroxall or Ventnor will be forced to follow a lengthy diversion through Whitwell from Monday (28th October) because of emergency gas repairs, but SGN say it is too early to say how long the main road to Ventnor will be closed for.
St John’s Road – the main route out of Wroxall to the North – will close between the Whiteley Bank Roundabout and The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary at 09:30, meaning that no through vehicle access will be possible in either direction.
Thus, as a result of the emergency works – which started earlier in the month – and the ongoing Leeson Road closure, all traffic heading into Wroxall or Ventnor will have to use Whitwell.
Southern Vectis have confirmed on their website that Route 3 buses will be unable to serve Wroxall and Ventnor. This news means that for as long as the works are taking place, no bus services will serve Wroxall.
The landslip-hit Leeson Road is currently closed so that 3x85m boreholes can be drilled into the ground. Whilst these works are progressing well, they are not yet finished and there is no exact time-frame given as to when Leeson Road will reopen.
Whilst no time frame has been given as to how long the works will take, Island Echo understands that it is more than a single overnight shift.
An SGN spokesperson has said:
“We’re currently working on a gas escape located outside the Donkey Sanctuary on St Johns Road in Wroxall. Due to the location of the gas main in the road, we need to temporarily close St Johns Road from the junction of Whiteley Bank Roundabout to past the Donkey Sanctuary.
“It’s too early to say how long the repair will take and we’ll provide updates on our website as we know more at https://www.sgn.co.uk/our-gas= works/roadworks-your-area
An Island Roads Spokesperson has said:
“We have been made aware that SGN need to close a section of St John’s Road Wroxall on Monday to repair a gas leak. Island Roads is very mindful of the ongoing closure of Leeson Road and will liaise with SGN to help minimise, as far as possible, the impact of this essential closure.
“Southern Gas Network has been asked to issue an update on the possible duration of the work as soon as they are able.”

The island is falling apart.
How much ground rent do the utility service pay the council for using the roads to bury their networks in? I don’t see why we should continually be disrupted when something goes wrong with their network and we have to be diverted, in this case doubling our journeys. Perhaps Southern gas would like to pay us for all the extra fuel we will have to use because of their obstruction.
No buses to Wroxall, that is a disgrace.
I’d have thought that would have been a blessing.
Doubt that British Gas will be working 24/7 on this.
Neither will SGN
Lol
Can’t be that much of a emergency gas repair, they been there a month and no one working today.
It like Island Roads operatives, by the
time they start work it’s time to go home
Can’t get the staff thesedays, since the
Plandemic, people have got lazy.
They come awake on payday though.
Why don’t these Companies work through the night and
get these jobs finished quickly.
Work through the night, they don’t work during the day.
This is disgusting . This island is getting worse.
thanks to SGN how the hell am I getting to work and back
. Thought about that have you. All us little people suffering again. Get your fu….g act together and start feeling a little something towards the population of ventnor or the island come to that. Pay for my time off work will you…. stupid question. Absolutely fuming .
Ventnor is becoming a NO go zone, soon it
will be impossible to get there.
Council taxes should be reduced for the residents
of Ventnor and Wroxall
I went through there yesterday, no one working there. If this is a gas leak they should be there working 24/7. They don’t care how much inconvenience they cause people. Hope no one in the Ventnor area needs an urgent ambulance or fire engine.
Services on the Island are 3rd world
Maybe if when leason rd was temporarily opened in august. Instead of the two or sometimes three island road employees ”monitoring” it. There was just the one sat their reading his newspaper they could have afforded to keep it open an extra few months.
Probably looking at the pictures, can they read!!
