Hats, gloves and boots at the ready as snow is being forecast for the Isle of Wight this Thursday.
As the mercury plummets, the Island could well see accumulations of snow as we head towards April – a stark contrast to the sunny blue skies and 21.5c temperatures experienced in the past 7 days.
Local forecasters IW Met Service say that much colder weather is to be expected on Wednesday, which will stay with us right through until Sunday.
The risk of snow will arise on Wednesday evening when rain moving across the region could turn wintry. Overnight further wintry spells of sleet and snow will move South across the Island but by daybreak the heaviest showers will have moved away with sunny spells developing.
However, by late Thursday morning and into the afternoon a mix of snow, sleet and soft hail is expected with some localised accumulations possible during the heaviest showers. The wind will be a fresh north to northeasterly, possibly gusting up to 50mph, bringing the potential for extremely poor driving conditions.
The sad news – or the good news depending on your viewpoint – is that any accumulations will melt away fairly quickly. It will then turn frosty overnight.
Friday will be another cold day with sunny spells at first, but the cloud will soon develop bringing some scattered showers of rain, hail and sleet. It will still feel cold but perhaps a little less so than on Thursday. Temperatures will be around 7-8c in a fresh northerly breeze, with a widespread frost on Friday night.
Looking ahead to the weekend… it will be cold and bright with the risk of showers during the afternoons, especially on Sunday. The showers will be of rain, hail or sleet, perhaps even a little snow mixed in here and there with temperatures dropping to 2-3c at times. Frosty nights are still likely across the Isle of Wight.

Couldn’t be worse timing really – just when we won’t be able to afford to turn the heating on!
Quick, Quick…..All islanders (especially old folk)…top up the car, and buy lots of loo roll and tinned apricots.

As Jones said “don’t panic Mr Mannering”
“Mainwaring”
No, it was definitely Captain Mannering
You have just made yourself look even more stupid.
You are both right, his name was indeed Mainwaring, but most of the characters (especially Pike) pronounced it Mannering.
I wouldn’t waste your time. You cant educate stupid.
can’t
Must be global cooling….open up the coal mines…
Idiot. Global warming puts more energy into the system meaning you have more sudden changes in the weather and the changes are more extreme. Having a strange weather event like this is excellently what global warming predicts. The last seven years have been the hottest on record. There was a time when a big storm with 100MPH winds was once a decade. We get three or four a year now.
This is why we love the IE comments section. Everyone takes everything so literally. Has anybody ever done any research into the words “sarcasm “ and “humour”?
Fred, or whatever your real name is, my mum and dad got married in April and she often tells me how it snowed on their wedding day. This was many decades ago (many more than she’d like me to say here!), well before global warming or climate change became a thing. So, it’s hardly ‘strange weather‘ to have a snow shower in April in the UK just the same as it’s not unusual to have a warm sunny day in March (just as we have had).
Germany, Poland, Australia, China, all increasing coal production, and we get useless windmills.. bring on the fracking and ramp up oil production, it wont make the slightest difference to what the weather does.
Panic buying due to set in again, just pretend you are self isolating for 5 days, all will be back to normal next week.
I suggest the met people get hold of a copy of the 60 year old ladybird kids book, “what to look for in spring” quote, “by the first week in april..it is usual to have a cold snap of weather” that sort of info wont suit the climate change fanatics..
Agreed.
A few years ago at a car show, it was -5 the first week of April
there is a big car show at detling in kent this weekend, I reckon that will be bitter, still going though!
Great. The sheep will be taking more petrol in panic over a tiny bit if snow.
Trust me, there will be no snow.
I don’t trust you, 6pm Ryde Snow, ok only lasted 2 minutes. But there was snow.
It snowed in multiple places, multiple times! Never trust someone that says “Trust me”!
IF it happens watch this space for more hedges jumping out at vehicles.
Nice to see everyone here pulling together.
What would you do in a time of crisis? The valiant actions of the Ukrainians spring to mind especially.
Youd be so busy eating each other an enemy would just sit back and enjoy the show.
Think about it.
Lol, got my first hater
i can smell something …oh what is it …oh i know its bull…it
