Works to repair a damaged sewer and manhole chamber following the emergence of a sinkhole in East Cowes last month are progressing well, Southern Water has confirmed.
It was back on 22nd September, as first reported by Island Echo, that the sinkhole first appeared on East Cowes’ Adelaide Grove.
Since then, a 24-hour road closure has been in place between the junctions with Minerva Road and Yarborough Road whilst specialist engineers work to repair the broken infrastructure.
Southern Water originally estimated that the repairs would take between 3-4 weeks.
The most recent update says that it is hoped that the works will be wrapped up on schedule by the end of next week.

A Southern Water spokesperson said:
“Following the discovery of a sinkhole in Adelaide Crescent last month, our teams have been working to repair a damaged sewer and manhole chamber. The next step is to line the sewer to future-proof it and help prevent any further issues.
“We continue to make good progress and hope to have the works wrapped up on schedule by the end of next week. We thank customers for their patience while we complete this urgent repair.”

Typical Southern Water bungling – they’re working in Adelaide Crescent while the sinkhole is in Adelaide Grove!
