Councillor Karl Love has this week announced his departure from the Cabinet and his role as the lead for adult social care and public health, which he held since May 2021.
The news broke ahead of yesterday’s annual full council meeting, which determines which Councillors hold certain committee roles, including the council’s chair, vice-chair, and chair of the planning committee.
Speaking about his shock departure, Cllr Love said he was happy with the things he and the adult social care and public health teams had achieved but was finding it more difficult to remain in post.
Cllr Love confirmed he was an independent in the Alliance but he would work with anyone who has an idea for the better of the Island people. He was appointed after the Alliance Group took the reigns of the Isle of Wight Council, and filled the executive positions with Alliance councillors.
Under the important adult social care and public health portfolio, responsibilities include nursing care, social workers, supported living and early help services. In the past year, Cllr Love said he had found it stressful trying to make the pounds stretch the extra mile and balancing staffing issues.
With continual cuts to budgets, the Isle of Wight Council last year had to find savings from other areas of the authority to balance the debts of adult social care.
The ruling Alliance Group has also taken another blow this week as councillors Chris Jarman, Dave Adams and John Medland left to start the Empowering Islanders group along with Councillor Peter Spink, who had left the Conservatives. A 4th Alliance member also left, Councillor Michael Lilley, who went to join the Liberal Democrats.

Just an idea about adult social care .If you work all your life and pay taxes to a certain borough then decide to move to a lovely quiet little island to retire that authority should be able to claim for your care from the afore mentioned borough. Sounds good in my head but I ‘m sure someone can let me know if this is just a silly idea or an interesting concept.
Funding for Adult social care comes from three sources, ie the NHS, the government and council tax payments. So regardless of where the recipient lived previously they have already paid their share in National Insurance, council tax and income tax. You also forgot to mention in your dig at overners that if they have £23000 in savings they pay for their own care anyway.
In the real world (not the island), very few people live their life in a “certain borough”. People move around frequently for education, work opportunities, a better house, and all sorts of other reasons. Only an islander would make this suggestion.
Rats … Sinking … Ship …
More good news. Surely the council is now ours?
We’re about to approve Cllr Love’s application to join the conservatives. He’ll be welcome with open arms.
This tedious and unfunny “blob squealey” drivel has really run its course. Move on …
Didn’t he used to be a school teacher?
Hope the replacement takes more care how taxpayers money is spent.
In the other electronic Island link newspaper it was stated he couldn’t stand for the more senior positions in Council if he held a cabinet position already.
