Firefighters worked to free a sheep that had become stuck in the mud on a rising tide at Corf Lake near Shalfleet yesterday evening (Tuesday).
Wholetime and retained crews from Newport were mobilised to the scene on the Newtown Estuary at around 18:40.
Once on scene, it became clear that ‘Shaun’ had got himself well and truly stuck in the thick mud.
Using specialist equipment from the Animal Rescue Unit – such as mud mats and an air lance – firefighters successfully freed the farmyard animal.
The sheep was soon reunited with his friends and fire crews were able to stand down from the incident – but not before a good hose down!

Well done
Should have shouted ‘miint sauce’ the sheep would free itself quickly.
Well done to everyone.
Great job guys/girls, you are appreciated. Suffering of any animal should always be mitigated. Hopefully Kevin, Wayne and Sharon kept on the grass.
We’ll done fire crews, great work, good job the water wasn’t deep looking at the height of some of you!!
Also well done to the Assistant Camp Warden from the Corf Scout Campsite who raised the alarm. The sheep was spotted by a member of staff at the Scout campsite where this incident took place. Well done all and the sheep was named Baaaaabara by scouts camping at Corf.
