Parents and carers are being reminded to take extra care at the seaside this Bank Holiday weekend and throughout the week as a mini heatwave hits the Island.
Shortly after 14:30 this afternoon (Wednesday) Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to North Walk, Ryde after a child was reported missing. Thankfully, on this occasion, the child was quickly located and reunited with their parents.
On a crowded beach it is easy for children to go missing and in this situation the father is said to have walked past their child twice without realising.
These top tips can help ensure that you and your family remain safe at the seaside.
• Never swim alone
• If you get into trouble in the sea, stick your hand in the air and shout for help
• Never use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas
• Keep an eye on children at all times and agree on a meeting point when you arrive at the beach, in case you’re separated.
• Don’t go into the sea after drinking alcohol
• If you see someone else in trouble call 999 and ask for the coastguard
Beach goers should also be aware of:
• Sunburn
• Dehydration
• Weever fish and jellyfish stings
• Insect stings
