The search for a person who is feared to have gone over the edge of Culver Cliff has entered a second day, with Police and HM Coastguard continuing their efforts to locate the individual.
It was at around 13:30 yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) that emergency services descended on the East Wight beauty spot following the worrying discovery of a number of personal items, as first reported by Island Echo.
Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams were initially mobilised, alongside Police, with the assistance of Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat later called upon.
As the afternoon progressed, the National Police Air Service helicopter from Redhill was tasked to conduct an aerial sweep of the Bembridge, Culver and Sandown areas, with Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat launched too.
When darkness fell, and in light of new information, Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter from Lee-on-Solent was scrambled to assist in the large-scale search operation. Following several hours of searching, Coastguard Rescue 163 from Lydd in Kent was also scrambled, taking over from Rescue 175.
Now, as the sun rises on a new day, Police and HM Coastguard are out searching the local area once again in a bid to locate the individual, who is thought to have gone over the edge of the cliff yesterday.
Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat is out on the water with land-based search teams also deployed.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is yet to issue any missing person appeals or confirm details of who they are looking for.
UPDATE @ 10:10 – Police have confirmed they are looking for missing 56-year-old Sarah Watson, from Ventnor.
