Southern Water says repairs to a burst water main in Sandown have been completed, with supplies expected to be fully restored by lunchtime today (Tuesday).
It was early yesterday afternoon that what is thought to be a 10-inch pipe failed off Golf Links Road, as first reported by Island Echo. This led to a loss of water supply to hundreds of homes and businesses in the seaside town.
Engineers from Clancy were called in to locate and fix the main, with work well underway to excavate the broken pipe last night. It had been hoped that the repair could be completed within a matter of hours, but work dragged on throughout the night.
It has now been confirmed that the repair has been successfully completed and work is now underway to put water back into the network.
4 tankers from the mainland were drafted in to help charge the local system yesterday evening and they continue to support the ongoing efforts to bring supplies back to normal for Sandown customers today. Beachfield Road, which was closed to allow the tankers to fill up the system, remains closed.
The delivery of bottled water to doorsteps across Sandown has also been carried out overnight for those on the Priority Service Register.
Thankfully, the disruption is expected to end shortly as it is currently anticipated that all affected customers will be back on mains supply by late morning.
If you have been affected, you may notice some discolouration or bubbles in your water – this is normal after a burst water main.
