Hundreds of homes and businesses in Sandown are without water supply this evening (Monday) as a result of a burst main in the area.
Southern Water say they are aware of the issue and engineers are working to repair the burst – located near Golf Links Road – as soon as possible.
The PO36 8 and PO36 9 postcodes are both affected by the loss of supply, which has seen the taps run dry for more than 4 hours.
It’s warned that Beachfield Road in the town is being closed to facilitate the arrival of water carriers at 19:30, which are to be used to top up the local water system to bring properties back on supply.
It is currently anticipated that water will be restored to affected customers later tonight, once the system is recharged, after several hours of disruption.
Southern Vectis say their Route 2, 3 and 8 buses bound for Newport will divert via Avenue Road and The Broadway. The High Street and Beachfield Road stops will not be served.
UPDATE @ 19:56 – Tankers have now arrived to Sandown to start filling the mains system.
Over at Golf Links Road, engineers from Clancy are beginning repairs to what is thought to be a 10-inch main, which has blown next to the athletics track.
Should the repair go well, it’s hoped that the main can be recharged late tonight.
Beachfield Road is closed from the junction with Melville Street with local diversions in place.
UPDATE @ 21:56 – Repairs to the burst main continue, with Souther Water expecting all supplies to be back on as normal by the morning.
Tankers are now providing support to the network, with supplies coming back online slowly.
The utility company has said that bottled water is being delivered to Priority Service Register customers overnight as a precaution.
UPDATE TUESDAY – The repair has been completed and water supplies are now being restored.
