Southern Water is carrying out coastal defence works using rocks and sand to protect one of its pumping stations on the Isle of Wight, as plans progress to replace a wall owned by the Isle of Wight Council.
The works have seen a temporary wall reinforced in a bid to protect the Prince Consort pumping station, located within St Thomas’ Street car park in Ryde.
Southern Water says the temporary measures are essential to protecting the site and maintaining services for customers while a replacement wall is progressed.
A spokesperson for Southern Water has said:
“To help protect our Princes Consort pumping station, we’ve been carrying out coastal defence works using rocks and sand to reinforce a temporary wall.
“We’re working together with the Isle of Wight Council, which owns the wall, to progress a replacement.
“Until then, these temporary measures remain essential to protecting the site and maintaining services for customers”.
Island Echo readers have reported seeing an oil-like film on the sand earlier this week, but Southern Water says the scene pictured above is just mud.
No timescale has been provided for when the replacement wall will be installed. The temporary coastal defences will remain necessary until a replacement is in place.
