On Thursday 23rd June – just over a week away – the country will vote in a referendum on whether the UK should leave or remain in the EU. Islanders are being reminded about key information ahead of polling day.
The deadline for registering in time to vote and have your say in the EU Referendum ended on the 9th June.
VOTING BY PROXY
The deadline to apply for new proxy applications is at 17:00 on Wednesday (15th June). Voting by proxy means that if you have already registered to vote but are unable to vote in person or by post, you can choose to have someone you trust cast your vote for you. In addition, the person you wish to appoint as your proxy can only act as proxy if they are 18 and are registered individually.
VOTING BY POST
The deadline for applying for a postal vote or cancelling a postal vote was 8th June.
If you are returning your vote for the EU referendum by post, don’t forget to include the Postal Voting Statement with your ballot paper.
Without returning the Postal Voting Statement which was issued with your ballot paper your vote won’t be counted.
If you’ve already submitted your ballot paper and have the Postal Voting Statement at home, sign it including your date of birth and send it to The Counting Officer, County Hall, High Street, Newport, PO30 1UD to ensure that it arrives before 10:00 on 23rd June 2016.
Alternatively you may drop it in to County Hall in an envelope marked for the attention of the Counting Officer before 22:00 on 23rd June 2016.
POLL CARDS
Poll cards for the EU Referendum started dropping through letterboxes from 20 May, so you should have received it by now. You will only receive a poll card if you are registered to vote as an elector and eligible to vote in the referendum.
The poll card will tell you when voting takes place and where you should go to vote on 23rd June.
WHERE CAN I VOTE?
The poll cards will tell you which polling station you have been allocated, so please check your poll card when it arrives. If you forget to bring your poll card to the polling station, don’t worry, you can still vote without it.
For this referendum, there are three changes from those polling stations used for the recent police and crime commissioner elections and these are:
• Hunnyhill Primary School will be replaced by The Restaurant, at the Isle of Wight College, Medina Way, Newport (parking is available on the left as you enter the college site);
• Sumerfields Primary School will be replaced by the Seminar Room at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Halberry Lane, Newport (the Seminar Room is on the left as you enter the hospice grounds);
• Newchurch sports pavilion will be replaced by Newchurch Parish Hall, High Street, Newchurch.
