cricketballLate afternoon rain caused the abandonment of Ventnor’s ECB Southern Electric Premier Division game at Bashley on Saturday.

Taking first use of a decent looking pitch on a bright morning, the visitors had to recover from early setbacks which saw openers Ollie Mills and Jake George back in the pavilion with only 15 runs on the board.

It was Marc-Antony Eysele, on his first team debut, and Travis Head who led the fightback in a partnership of 129 for the third wicket as Ventnor pursued a challenging total.  The former Totton & Eling all-rounder Eysele impressed in an innings of 60 while Aussie Head took his run haul past the 600 mark with a typically fluent 68.

When both departed in quick succession, the innings looked to have hit the buffers before Jamie Miller’s fine unbeaten 50, supported by Chris Ridley with 20 and further contributions from Hugh Calloway and Rob Snell, helped add 100 and an eventual score of 252-8 from 64 overs.

Persistent rain prevented Bashley’s reply getting under way but with an adjusted target requiring them to score only 154 from 39 overs, Ventnor skipper Ian Hilsum would probably have been none too disappointed at the outcome.
