A prison officer has been seriously assaulted at HMP Isle of Wight after being ‘attacked with hot water’ by an inmate – the second serious incident at the prison in just over a week.
It is understood that the incident occurred around 16:00 on Wednesday afternoon, when the officer was doused in the face and neck with hot water.
The individual was taken to St Mary’s Hospital just across the road for treatment, although the extent of their injuries is unknown.
Sources say the water was thrown directly at the officer during an altercation within the walls of Parkhurst.
This latest assault follows the shocking stabbing of prison officers at the Albany site last week. In both cases, insiders have raised concerns over ongoing staffing shortages and pressure on officers to unlock prisoners despite a lack of sufficient staff numbers to do so safely.
The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that the matter has been referred to the police.
A spokesperson has said:
“Violence against our hardworking staff is inexcusable, and we do not tolerate this, this matter has been referred to the police.
“The Government has made it clear it will do whatever we can to protect our hardworking staff – which is why we are trialling tasers in prisons and mandated protective body armour for prison officers working with the most dangerous offenders”.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that they are investigating an assault on a man in his 40s.
Enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Fully agree, its a thankless job for little reward. Years ago when the scum stepped out of line, they knew they could be dragged off to the seg and given a good slap. Kept them inline.
Now with ‘rights’ they are able to complain, report and cause issues for offices. More rights than the staff have.
Anyone who has abused another’s ‘rights’ and been found guilty, should automatically have waived their claim to any rights, until their release.
My thoughts and sympathies go to the officers involved, body armour at least. And if the senior officers agree its unsafe to let them out of their cells, that call should be made. Not abused to total lock down, but an experienced call.
Maybe use out of cell time as a reward for good behavior.
lets get back to doing hard labour, these pieces of scum are well known for being the most manipulative prisoners in the system as they are very sneaky at grooming kids, closed visits & remain in the segregation unit. Oh sorry it’s the care & separation unit now bloody snowflakes.
