Motorists travelling through Sandown and Lake can expect 12 weeks of travel disruption from later on this month as Lake Hill becomes one-way to enable refurbishment works to the railway bridge.
As previously exclusively reported by Island Echo, Network Rail is undertaking works to the girder bridge that spans across the busy main Sandown to Lake road.
It was originally thought that temporary traffic lights would be erected but the decision has now been taken to enforce a one-way system.
Work will get underway on Monday 13th February and last until Friday 5th May.
Motorists will be able to travel from Sandown towards Lake, but traffic heading in the opposite direction will be diverted via The Fairway and Perowne Way.
To enable the free flow of traffic, a ‘no waiting at any time’ restriction will be introduced along the west side of The Fairway, along the north side of Station Approach and both the north and west sides of Perowne Way.
South Western Railway has confirmed to Island Echo that the works will not impact the Island Line timetable. Trackside works will be taking place at night during the middle of the week.
These latest works come less than a year after Lake Hill was made one-way for utility works. That restriction lasted a month and initially caused lengthy 30-minute tailbacks, mainly due to the lights at Avenue Road/Morton Common not being adjusted. Motorists will be hoping Island Roads don’t make the same mistake twice…

Oh what the actual hell??
Why was this not scheduled to go along with the ‘utility works’? And can we guess at just what particularly useless and disruptive ‘utility’ company that was? I’m guessing S-Fibre??
Let’s hope it’s all runs smoothly without any hold ups and delays! Pleeeeease!
Let’s hope Island Roads get it right this time and traffic moves freely without any hold ups or delays! Pleeeeease!!!!!!
Wouldn’t hold your breathe
Hopefully the one way system on Lake Hill includes the Fairway and Perone way. Last time, with two way traffic, the pinch points, along Perone Way, we’re the main reason for grid lock as they were effectively acting like permanently parked cars.
The Tesco Express junction needs sorting out permanently,
before a school child is seriously hurt !
Most cars come around that bend like it is Brands hatch.
So right on half term and Easter. Great timing !
Not a chance that the lights will be adjusted or the impact assessed.
They didn’t even bother to comply with their legal obligation to coordinate major works and minimise disruption so expecting them to think about the needs of road users is just pure fantasy
It’s just a pity we can’t invoice them for our wasted time.
hope they are paying for the extra fuel we will use
Expect the usual one person working and the other managers with their tick sheets.
Wiuldnt it make more sense to turn Perowne Way. one way the traffic would flow hell of a lot better & surely it would be a lot safer as well
