The 53rd annual Cowes to Torquay powerboat race set off in style yesterday morning (Sunday) with crews racing down to Torquay in Devon.
Setting off at around 09:00, the powerful and noisy powerboats blasted through the Solent to The Needles before battling it out along the coast to Haldon Pier, Torquay in less than 90 minutes.
Coming across the line first was ‘Going Lean’, averaging 88.02mph for the entire run to Torquay. Dry Martini’s decision to move from Historic class to full racing in B Class seems to have been a wise move as they averaged 76.8 mph.
Before taking a short break in the Devonshire seaside town, the race resumed back to the Island followed by an awards ceremony, ‘Going Lean’ taking overall victory with a time of 2hrs 17mins and 36 seconds with ‘Silverline’ coming in second at 2hrs 22mins and 7 seconds.
