Police have responded to an attempted break in at a swimming pool in Ryde tonight (Saturday).
At just before 21:25, a 999 call to the Force Control Room alerted Police to the situation at The Waterside Pool in Ryde.
Officers responded at speed and were on scene at North Walk within minutes, which helped prevent any damage being caused to the local leisure centre.
A dog unit was deployed as part of the incident, but it’s unclear at this stage if the culprits have been apprehended.
Staff at the swimming pool have praised the Amazon-owned Ring system for alerting them to the crime in progress.
UPDATE SUNDAY – Police have confirmed that 2 men were seen to flee the area and, despite a local area search, they were not located.
The men are described as:
- White, 18-20 years old, approximately 5ft 11ins tall and wearing a black tracksuit
- White, 20 years old, approximately 5ft 11ins tall and wearing a grey hoody and dark shorts
Anyone with any information is asked to call Police on 101, quoting 44220060782.

What’s more worrying is that we were the people that made that call at 21.08 to the control room to advise that the break in was in progress, however when I said we were on north walk (canoe Lake) in RYDE, the controller first asked for the postcode, then suggested that we were actually in Portsmouth. Delayed response as we were driving back to Newport at 21.20 to be passed by said police vehicles in wootton clearly going to attend the incident we had reported 10 minutes previous! Local at its best! Worrying!
Why would anyone want to break into a swimming pool…..and don’t say for a swim!!!!
To smash the place up probably, cos that would be such a laugh to them.
I hope the Police dog found these imbiciles.
You seen his much water is now!!!
Black Market water up for sale.
This is a community owned pool. Such a shame it was a target, I would advise everyone to download the “What 3 Words” app. A real saver in any emergency situation. Also KnifeSavers. Amazing life saving apps.
I agree but but difficult when you using said phone to make the call whilst incident is happening. I always thought they pinged the mast to find your phones gps. Buy the time I had finished the call the kids had ran off anyway!
That’s the point – they are just kids, but unlike most from decent families, they have just been left to their own devices – no parental involvement. It’s all the rest of us who have to bear the costs of their misguided behaviour.
There are many of these ferals in Ryde – a place absent of any policing. We once overnighted in our boat in Ryde Harbour, I had very little sleep as I was on watch over my young family, as local drunken youths occupied the quayside, throwing stones around the boats and creating… needless to say, we never went there again !
