Police are refusing to confirm whether a firearm was recovered from the scene of the death of a man in his 70s on Pan Estate in Newport yesterday (Wednesday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were mobilised to Pan Close, off Furrlongs, shortly before 15:30. Teams initially rendezvoused near to Barton Primary School before moving in when the scene was declared safe.
It was confirmed last night that the body of a male was discovered at a residential address, with Island Echo revealing that the man was found in the rear garden of the semi-detached home. The casualty is now known to be a male in his 70s.
It’s claimed that a firearm was involved in yesterday’s incident, however, Hampshire Constabulary has refused to comment on whether a firearm was recovered from the scene and whether a firearm was involved in the death. The matter has been passed to the Coroner.
The force has, however, confirmed that Armed Police attended the incident.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service dispatched 2 ambulance crews, an operational commander and a Critical Care doctor to the scene at Pan Close. It’s understood that the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was also scrambled, but stood down en-route.
Despite the best efforts of medics, nothing could be done to save the local man’s life and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death is not being treated as suspicious and cordons around the property have now been lifted.
