A person thought to be inside the former town hall building in Ryde has prompted an emergency response from police, firefighters and paramedics this morning (Sunday).
Emergency services are currently in attendance on Lind Street, where the incident is unfolding around the derelict Ryde Theatre building.
The situation began shortly before 07:15 and has seen 2 fire appliances and a plethora of police units descend on the area, as well as an operational commander and an ambulance crew from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Police have entered the unlit building to conduct a room by room search. They’ve entered armed with the big red key and torches.
Officers have been seen looking out onto the roof space from open windows.
Lind Street remains open to both motorists and pedestrians.
UPDATE @ 08:48 – Island Echo understands the incident relates to a concern for welfare.
A thorough search of the building is underway with officers situated to the front and back of the vast building.
UPDATE @ 11:40 – More than 4-and-a-half hours after the incident began, a male has been located and detained by Police.
He has been led out of the building and into a cell van.
The assistance of a local dog unit aided search efforts.

Yep, the traffic patrol have responded 🙂
So elsewhere you can now commit crime, speed, go without ambulance etc ?. Having worked in this building unless you are familiar there is a very good chance that they will be unable to search every room,in/below and above. It was town hall with secret rooms/safe rooms and cellars and they are searching in the dark!.
well done doggie bet you enjoyed your searching and your treat afterwards.
The big red key, what does that mean?
An enforcer
The ” Big Red Key” is a slang term for a small but effective battering ram the Police use to break down doors. Give it a google and you will get a far better explanation than I could provide. Hope this helps.
I presume it means an axe.
The key for the Nuclear bomb proof room for councillors if a nuclear attack occurs.
Upon emerging, they would have to live like we do now, cold and poor, if all the council tax payers were turned to ash
We might never know. 🙂
Where were MI5? Maybe call in the army
What did this guy do or was he asleep and homeless? big response at taxpayers expence for a sleeping homeless man, as no crime was mentioned ?? oh of course, welfare for the individual, sinister…he’d be better off pretending he’s Albanian.
Two fire engines, four or five police cars and vans, a police dog, an ambulance and an operational commander – all for one person inside a building?
This must have been a very important person to justify this amount of resources. Who was it?
You don’t get this sort of response when you inform the police of a burglary at your home.
It was Lord Lucan.
