A number of surrender bins will be situated at various locations across the Isle of Wight this week as part of Operation Sceptre. Op Sceptre is Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s approach to tackling knife crime and is part of a national week of action coordinated by the National Police Chief’s Council. Additional policing activity will take place between now and Sunday (19th May), with officers working closely with partners to protect communities and young people from the threat of knife crime. Islanders are being encouraged to dispose of illegal blades and other offensive weapons – with no questions asked. The amnesty bins will be in place as per the below timetable.
Members of the public can also fill in this form if they wish to surrender a weapon but are unable to get to one of the bins – police can arrange collection: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=eUPeI3qVpkGVhxZdbGtNvXACwvLSWJZMuRW4uVkbDLFUMDNNRVdVTUlENFBDN0JFUzY4OTFMUVNFNC4u. In 2019, tough new measures were brought in to strengthen the response to knife crime and violent crime, and a number of offensive weapons were banned for possession in a private place such as your home. These include knuckledusters, Death Stars, curved swords and Zombie knives. A full list can be found at https://nbcc.police.uk/business-support/knife-guidance/offensive-weapons-act. Chief Superintendent, Clare Jenkins, lead for Serious Violence in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Constabulary, says:
“It’s important, that our communities are aware that although we have weeks of actions to tackle knife crime, it is a year round initiative. As a Force and with the Violence Reduction Partnership, we are consistently undertaking significant work to reduce and disrupt serious violence in our towns and cities. “Seizing knives and arresting high-harm offenders is our priority but it creates a perception that it is the solution, rather than part of a wide-reaching, holistic approach to knife crime. Working with partners is key in our work to tackle knife crime, policing cannot do this alone.”

I can think of 3 times when Island Echo has reported on someone being caught with a knife in public and none of them ended up in prison
I need mine just incase a old fart wants it with a younger person very odd they are
Make sure your all the right thing all otherwise
What does this odd collection of words actually mean Reg ??
“Seizing knives and arresting high-harm offenders is our priority but it creates a perception that it is the solution, rather than part of a wide-reaching, holistic approach to knife crime. Working with partners is key in our work to tackle knife crime, policing cannot do this alone.”
woke rubbish.. ‘holistic’??? better form a kumbaya clapping circle and hand out lanyards..
give them 10 yrs for carrying and it’ll end overnight.
Can you please explain what is “woke” about the statement you quote. I don’t disagree with what you are saying but attributing it to “woke” is about as relevant as saying it is racist. Or has the word “woke” ceased to mean anything beyond being a general term of abuse?
I am certain we will all sleep a little safer when some old lady hands in a large kitchen knife that her arthritic old hands can no longer manipulate, and some stern faced Policeman holds it up for the photo shoot along with a 1970’s cheap metal Samurai sword to the ‘press’.
Until we stop and return all the third world arriving daily, and rapidly reproducing once here to gain an immoveable foothold, then our prisons will never be able to cope with the rising crime so sentences which are meaningful can never ever again be given.
See the real solution to the problems, not just PR gimmicks
Clearly such isn’t working hence we have so much more crime, but they dare NOT say who and why.
I hope they get donated to a third world country where they are much needed
Are there any people left in third world countries? Seems as though most all who are adept in using knives have recently moved away to add enrichment to every area they choose to settle in
Britain is a 3rd World country.
We have an UNELECTED Migrants son ruining Britain!
Just how many times must we have these ‘knife amnesty’s’ before some over-paid, woke, tree-hugging, plant-eater realises that the ONLY solution is SERIOUS jail time for carrying a knife in public. Forget all these so-called new laws about what constitutes an offensive weapon. IF you have a knife/bladed article in public and it is not actually being used for a specific work purpose – LOCK THEM UP!
I mean, seriously, what feral youth is going to go along to one of these ‘knife banks’ to drop his weapon in?
How detached from reality do you have to be to think that is ever going to happen?
If they wanted to dispose of a weapon, and I can’t think that’s even a scenario that would occur to them, why wouldn’t they simply put it in the bin at home, or any of the waste bins in the streets? No, they’re apparently going to look up where the knife bins are on a particular day, what times it’s there, take my weapon on the bus with me, and in broad daylight go along and drop it in the bin provided.
Can ANYONE seriously see that happening?
Its great this is happening but I have to say like I have before and It was taken down?
Why are they being sold! T
They are on all the common sites online that everyone uses ! with evil looking Knives.
They are in shop window displays on the Island and not your run of the mill type knives they are nasty big terrifying looking knives.
It has to be stopped at source.
Why I ask? why are they even being sold???
