Reports of a drunken man repeatedly entering the sea prompted a callout for Police and Coastguard teams this evening (Saturday).
Several police units rushed to the scene on Ryde Beach – near to the Canoe Lake – at just after 18:00 following reports of the mans behaviour.
Island Echo has been told that the man would not leave the water, prompting HM Coastguard to task Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team to assist Police and ensure the safety of all those involved.
The man was eventually brought to land and spoken to by officers, with the Coastguard team also providing safety advice.
No arrests have been made, and teams have now stood down from the incident.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

Not a day goes by…
That was quick reporting IE, do you have a Ryde correspondent now?
Probably someone on his hollibobs who found out how much it would cost him to park on a children’s recreation ground very soon. Poor sod was just trying to get home cheaply, thus avoiding equally exorbitant ferry fares. Two birds, one stoned…
Actually, having seen all this, he was out of the water and staggering around the beach at the point people drew the coastguard’s attention to him. Uninvited he then joined in a game of frisbee (not very well!) and was finally led off the beach by the coastguard – surely not their normal line of work so well done them. We don’t know where ‘several police units rushed to the scene’ came from!
More charity kept low life one expects.
What a waste of Taxpayers money
