There is a ‘window of opportunity’ for a Medieval church on the Isle of Wight to raise some much needed funds to help restore its stained glass windows, which are badly in need of repair.
St George’s Church in Arreton hope that a concert on 21st April, delivered by the popular Phoenix Choir, will attract a good audience.
Part of this church dates from the 12th century. The church features a Saxon wall and a Burma Star window. The short tower with its unique buttresses contains a ring of 6 bells, the oldest of which was cast in 1589.
St George’s was the original Minster Church of the Isle of Wight with its parish stretching from the north to the south coast of the Island and is regarded as one of the most historically important churches in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. With some remaining evidence of its pre-Norman origins, it is a fine example of a Norman Church built in the 11th Century.
In their 9th concert year, the 50-strong mixed Phoenix Choir have added further to their wide repertoire of easy-listening songs. Included in their first 2018 concert programme will be music from films Romeo and Juliet, Gladiator and Meet Me In St Louis; from musicals Sister Act and Jesus Christ Superstar; Roy Orbison’s A Love So Beautiful; Demis Roussos’ For Ever And Ever; the Mamas and the Papas California Dreamin’; a medley of well-known Edith Piaf hits and others.
The concert on Saturday 21st April starts at 19:30, admission is free with a retiring collection. Refreshments and raffle.
