Fire crews are working to extricate an individual from their vehicle following a road traffic collision on St Mary’s Roundabout this evening (Sunday).
At just before 17:30, 2 vehicles were involved in a collision when 1 of the vehicles emerged from the industrial estate slip road.
Emergency services are currently on scene at the busy Newport roundabout at the start of the southbound dual carriageway, which has been closed to all traffic. There is no access to Hunnyhill either.
Motorists are being diverted via the industrial estate and back onto the southbound dual carriageway at the Wakes slip road.
2 fire appliances from Newport have been joined at the incident by Police, ambulance crews and a fire duty officer.
UPDATE @ 19:35 – A man has been extricated from his vehicle after being medically trapped.
The incident has now been cleared and the road has re-opened.
Editor’s footnote: It was originally reported that a woman was trapped. This was based on the early information from the scene. It has now been confirmed that a man was in fact trapped.

Happens all the time, people pulling out from that junction. I hope the work they will be doing stops this from happening.
It would help if more people used indicators!
Totally agree, indicators seems a dirty word on the island. When they do indicate on roundabouts it’s the wrong indication.
These led lights are dire. Add 90 year olds driving alongside drugged up chav’s, and an accident waiting to happen. Lucky they were near the hospital, hope they have enough beds.
Prob not my m8s been on a bed in a&e corridor all night….and still is
And that’s even before it’s finished. A complete waste of our money as usual
Yes, especially as now we are being “threatened” with £5million of further cuts to IOWC services.
FAO the Editor.
You keep using the words “medically trapped “ for a situation like this. It sounds daft. Try saying “ physically trapped” or better still just say trapped.
Medically trapped and physically trapped are two different things and indicate a differing level of severity.
– Medically trapped is when an injury, or suspected injury, such as neck pain, means that a full extrication is the best option to prevent any potential further injury to the casualty.
– Physically trapped means the individual cannot leave the vehicle by their own accord, i.e. their legs are trapped under a crumpled dash.
I stand corrected. Whilst it may be a technical term used by the emergency services, I think to the majority of readers it sounds daft.
Agree. Why not just say trapped we don’t need to know how unless we’re involved.
After traffic lights have been installed and the carriageway straightened Collisions will be more severe as the people who jump red lights on the main road will be travelling at 40+
More bad driving on the I o w
I wish you would fill your cavity
