The Isle of Wight Council has issued a statement in which the authority confirms that people should not be travelling to the Isle of Wight for holidays or visits.
Ahead of the second national lockdown on Thursday, Council leader Dave Stewart has said:
“The government has provided a very clear message about people continuing to travel for work and medical needs, but that travel for holidays and visits should cease.
“We know that travel connections with the mainland are vital to the Island’s resilience and the wellbeing of its community at this time.
“Food, fuel, medical supplies and materials need to be maintained, as does the availability of mainland healthcare; keyworkers traveling to support the community, and for commuters travelling to and from work.
“The ferries also carry all of the goods we might purchase online while non-essential retail is closed. The Island needs to have services open for these reasons.
“The ferry operators are very active in working with the council to dissuade people from travelling that do not need to do so and this will be helped by the government’s clear guidance that people should not travel for holidays or to visit second homes.
“The ferry operators and the council are unable to police each individual reason for travel and have to rely on everyone obeying the lockdown laws.
“Additional restrictions such as temperature testing on passengers have been considered and discounted because only a Covid-19 test can determine whether a person has an infection and many people show no symptoms at all.
“We are working with the operators to understand the impact that lockdown will have on service schedules and on ensuring that we have services provided to and from the Island.”

People ‘shouldn’t’ steal, drug deal, use violence, and a myriad of other things, but do, and will continue to do so.
With the NHS being a huge employer from cleaners to top surgeons, most people know of someone who will lend them i.d to then ‘use’ as an excuse to do what only ‘key workers’ should be doing.
This weak loop-hole needs closing, all workers are ‘key’ and just because you answer a phone for the NHS, this should not give you and your entire family the right to spread this disease to others.
People are blinded by fear, and don’t ‘see’ it how it is, insomuch as many NHS workers risk, work load and wealth has improved since CV, and only a few of such are at the front line, and deserving of us denting our sauce-pans now.
Try seeing a doctor now, or getting a blood test, or a specialist appointment if in doubt.
So true
Can we include shipping social housing overspill here as well?
As always it relies on peoples honesty.
A polite request may have been effective in 1930, but the population despite, or perhaps ‘by’ being ‘given more’ have now become greedy, selfish, dishonest and uncaring.
So, only the few honest or meek will obey such ruling, and many use fake id key worker passes to ‘justify’ their wrongdoings if ever questioned.
So, the lockdown, ironically will likely make thing ‘worse’ for us Islanders as people flee high risk areas, to stay at lower risk areas, bringing disease within them.
Anyone coming onto any form of craft arriving here should be forced to show an ‘all clear’ CURRENT cv test result, taken within the last few days.
NOT 100% fool proof I know, but better than relying on honesty, when that is the last thing on people’s minds when they are escaping the hot spots of disease.
Wightlink Lym Yar route will most likely be pulled, Wightlink will probably announce job cuts, red funnel will most likely pull some sailings. So I wouldn’t imagine too many holidayers will be coming over. Question is though, if Wightlink go bust what will happen with workers who need to travel back and forth? After all they don’t have alot of money left.
This is not meant to be demeaning or insulting, but I am not understanding this perceived or real, cv poverty?
Who are these people who are suddenly lacking money? Furlough makes up most of job losses cash, oft the employer pays the missing amount, and social security, council tax subsistence and rent and mortgage hols do the rest if needed?
Can you explain to me why some get all the above, and their child allowance and tax credits, UV credit, disability money, carers money etc, and are ‘still’ supposedly broke, even after now getting their children fed for free, despite being given charity HMG cash (which we all have to fund) via benefits to pay for their food?
Truly don’t ‘understand’ the issue here?? Or why some seem ok, whilst others ‘apparently’ have to near beg to survive. The law, rules and benefits are there for all so if some are managing, then so should all be.
In regards to me saying “after all they don’t have alot if money left”. I was talking about Wightlink not having the money. They have been run for years on credit and now they have used said credit lines they would appear to be out of options other than to ask it’s shareholders to reinvest. But I do understand your point of people stating they are broke yet drive a year old car, earn 80k per year and live in a big house when there are people out there with very little and who struggle to put food on the table.
Spot on Copea.
I know of many many people far better off since cv. They got more tax credits, the self employed in many cases kept working for cash and employers even Cllr in his private concern gained greatly from such.
Yet of course NONE would admit such, so all we hear is the genuine or whingers, not those who ‘use’ such to their gain.
The employer does not have to make up the fulough and many haven’t, not every one can get benefits
WHY, can’t everyone get benefits? The law is the same for all. Or do you mean the very rich ‘can’t get benefits?
Surely the ferry’s are in hest position to monitor travellers.
Oh forgot they would rather have the money over the virus.
If army is out in Liverpool why not at ferry terminals on mai land.
Because we don’t live in a police state.
Yet!
So why then does All airports have a temperature test. What just to waste there time.??
Perhaps photo i.d might be the answer, most people have a driving licence, passport, bus pass or some form of work i.d.
not a police state –
The ferry companies let anyone on with any excuse last lockdown, they’re are not going to do it this time, even though they have had twice the number of customers through the summer than they usually have.Their profits come before the Islands safety.
mandy – you really do not understand anything do you.
the ferries are public transport – they are not mandated by government to police the rights of citizens to freedom of movement within the country – how hard is that for you to understand.
Actually Liberty, the IOW council are working with IOW police this time. The ferry companies have been instructed to discourage bookings and travelling over. The police this lockdown have been granted powers to stop and issue fines if people are travelling outside the guidelines, for work purposes, medical appointments or in an emergency. No holidays and no travelling over to second homes. Let’s hope so…..
What l do understand is that unless we stick to the guidelines this lockdown will last even longer. So the ferry companies can do their bit as well.
nope – unless the government specifically instructs transport operators to police it, then the ferries won’t do anything, other than put up notices on their websites, advising customers to observe government guidelines and that is that.
Jeremy Corbyn has not heeded this advice when does he finish his holiday here on the Island .
He was aloud at the time he come over
The AirBnB in our street will no doubt still be letting visitors come and stay as they did during last lockdown. I contacted the police via the web to let them know and mailed AirBnB direct, but of course, nothing happened – no response from either. If the police won’t upload the law, people will continue to abuse the system and put others at risk.
so much for second home owners not travelling to the iow, you want to have a walk round bembridge and seaview, its packed already, once again the iow used and abused
If some do attempt to come over, I wonder if they will be challenged by the ferry companies. Undoubtedly, there will be some who have the ‘i’ll do what I like’…..
no challenge – ferries not mandated to stop people – that is the polices job
CalMac ferries linking the islands in Scotland and mainland ‘policed’ passengers travelling during the last full lockdown and indeed refused travel to some, so why can’t Wightlink or Red Funnel.
Greed
They shouldn’t – but they will.
And they will because they want to.
