A dog that ran off from its owner and found itself high upon Culver Cliff has had a lucky escape after managing to zig-zag to safety.
The Luddington family were enjoying a walk from Culver Down to Yaverland yesterday lunchtime (Sunday) when their much-loved family pet, Jude, suddenly ran off.
Despite their attempts to coax him back he ended up going over the edge of the cliff – with the family left fearing the worst.
Members of the public walking along the beach spotted Jude high upon the cliff, snapping this incredible photo (below) showing just how high he really was.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked to the scene after the concerned walkers alerted HM Coastguard to the worrying situation.
Amazingly, Jude was able to negotiate the difficult terrain and made it safely to the beach below. As a result, the Coastguard Rescue Team was stood down whilst en-route to Yaverland.
Walkers on the beach were able to call a mobile number on Jude’s tag and reunite him with the Luddington’s, who have described the situation as “one hell of an adventure!”.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

For God’s sake. When will these absolutely mindless, stupid idiots learn to keep their precious dogs on leads. It’s not rocket science. Dogs. Cliffs. Guess what, dogs don’t know about the dangers but you do. Firstly take the dog off them and give the poor thing to a responsible person or family and secondly charge them a substantial amount for services rendered in the rescue and finally make them take a course on animal “owner common sense” and then allow them to keep something more than a goldfish maybe in ten years time. If Jude is “much loved” then it’s owners need to look hard at their responsibilities.KEEP DOGS ON LEADS!!!!
You ever had a dog? If you had you know they can run off, at great speed, often chasing birds and get into trouble. You have no idea where they were walking the dog when it ran off. They could have easily been a fair distance from the edge.
Accidents happen, stop victim blaming.
Fred, they were up on Culver Down, cliff edge all around. It’s really not that difficult!
Oh Fred. I have had many dogs over my lifetime and still have three. I have never let any of them run aimlessly around off their leads in public spaces, especially in dangerous areas such as cliffs. Fred, get a brain and if you are a dog owner I pity the poor thing or things if you are one of the mindless morons who risk their precious lives and the brilliant rescue services then I hope that you can perhaps eventually get a modicum of common sense. I reiterate – KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEAD!!!!!
Not a hope.
Dog owners seem to think their little darling has a right to run anywhere, jump on anybody, foul anywhere.
Not all dog owners do this & it’s really unfair to suggest we are all irresponsible
Spot on, couldn’t agree more. Time for zero tolerance of irresponsible dog owners !
Dog loved so much by the family they walk it off a lead next to a cliff dogs don’t understand danger just like you wouldn’t let your 1 year old child play next to a cliff
So glad the dog didn’t fall to its death. If it had it would have been the owners fault. Anyone with a brain knows, or should, when you’re walking near to a cliff’s edge, YOU PUT YOUR DOG ON A LEAD!!!!
One hell of a adventure that family are a bunch of idiots
But did the dog catch the rabbit?
That’s the real question?
Most dogs should be safe walking around Culver as there is a fence all around as the Cowes roam there. The fence only gets broken down when idiot humans try to jump off.
Cows!
And you sir, are an idiot.
