Old Charlton House in Cowes have installed the Tovertafel (‘Magic Table’ in Dutch) in their care home – the first independent care home to do so in the Isle of Wight – and are holding a Summer Fete on Saturday 21st July to celebrate.
The Tovertafel is an award-winning innovation from the Netherlands, which is renowned for its cutting-edge approach to dementia care. The technology has been designed to help those at a later stage on their dementia journey be more active and create moments of happiness. It consists of a series of interactive games that are projected on a table. The light games encourage players to reach out towards them and the lights subsequently respond to their hand and arm movements, allowing the residents to play with light, which is truly magical.
Old Charlton House is a privately owned residential care home where maintaining quality of life is of paramount importance. Their philosophy of care has been developed through years of experience and recognises everyone’s wish for privacy, independence and freedom of choice. They recognise the importance of offering varied activities to stimulate and encourage movement and participation.
The Tovertafel creates a fun, safe environment for all residents. The games are formulated with the intention to trigger a sense of reminiscence among players in order to encourage stimulation socially, cognitively and physically. As light simulations, games are projected onto a table and include gardening, fishing and popping balloons.
Commenting on the installation, Gilly Holmes at Old Charlton House said:
“This magic table will make such a difference to our residents, the change of atmosphere within the home was instant, the place was buzzing, residents, staff and visiting children can’t help but interact with each other while using the table and it’s a pleasure to see”.
John Ramsay, the CEO of Shift8* Limited – the company which brought the Tovertafel to the UK said:
“We are so excited that Old Charlton House have installed their first Tovertafel. It’s really great to see independent homes recognising the wonders that cutting edge technology can bring to the wellbeing and happiness of their residents”.
