Plans for a new children’s home on the outskirts of Newport have been met with objections from neighbours, who say the application lacks detail and could impact the local area.
Milford Del Support Agency has submitted an application to change the use of a residential property in East Newport to allow for the care and accommodation of children or young people under the age of 18.
Three neighbouring residents have raised concerns, highlighting issues including reduced housing stock, safety risks due to the nearby main road, narrow lanes and pavements, and the use of private access roads and turning areas. They also cited potential air and noise pollution, as well as a lack of parking.
East Newport resident Jeffrey Vince has said:
“The application is lacking in detail and substance.”
He also told the Isle of Wight Council he did not receive any notification about the application, despite being an affected party.
According to a Planning Statement submitted by BCM Wilson Hill, Milford Del is a family-run, Island-based care provider that already operates several similar homes across the Isle of Wight. The statement emphasises a growing local demand for such services.
The statement said:
“There is an identified and urgent local need for additional children’s residential accommodation on the Isle of Wight.
“This is confirmed by correspondence from the placements and commissioning manager at the Isle of Wight Council, who has expressed full support for the proposal.”
Supporting comments from the council officer were included in the submission, stating that there is a ‘significant shortfall’ in suitable residential care options for children on the Isle of Wight.
Public consultation on application 25/01722/FUL is open until Tuesday (7th January), with a decision expected on Monday (28th January).

Care and compassion for young people in need on the Isle if Wight is staggering eh??
The only thing not objected too was breathing OUR air. What a lot of pathetic objections. If a jobless family with 6 delinquent kids moved in you couldn’t object before they arrived. Lots of genuinely unpopular families couldn’t be objected too but these neighbours want to object to vulnerable disadvantaged children having a home. Shame on you.
People have to live somewhere, stop complaining.
Could always move M igrants over instead.
Happy New Year
Migrants are people too.
