Isle of Wight Division 2 side Yarmouth & Calbourne have sadly announced the end of their football club.
The club have cited both financial difficulties and their inability to raise a side as the reasons for their disbandment.
Yarmouth & Calbourne have announced on their Facebook page:
“Sadly, Yarmouth & Calbourne will be folding.
“This decision has been made by the committee due to financial reasons and – due to the lack of people staying next season – we cannot field a side.”
Yarmouth Town were founded in 1907; Calbourne were formed in 1974. The 2 clubs merged in 1997.
Both Yarmouth and Calbourne have previously achieved success in cup competitions. Yarmouth won the Junior A Cup in 1947 and 1976 as well as the Junior B Cup in 1989 and 1991. Calbourne were the Junior B cup winners in 1995. Yarmouth & Calbourne won the Junior B cup as a merged side in 2012.
The club have struggled in recent years. Yarmouth & Calbourne suffered a record-breaking 3-year winless run before the lockdown. This season, the club finished 8th in Division 2, with 10 points from 18 games.
Yarmouth & Calbourne’s disbandment leaves West Wight as the only club playing competitive football in the west of the Isle of Wight.
