Islander and air fence sponsor John Thorburn has come up with a very good reason for any Wightlink Warrior to break the National League speedway track record around Smallbrook during 2016.
John has purchased an air fence advertising banner in memory of his late mother, Lil Thorburn and is set to give away £250 to any Island team rider that officially breaks the national league track record.
John says:
“My mum Lil loved speedway as much as I do and when it closed in 2013 we were both equally as disappointed. Between its closure and reopening unfortunately Lil passed away and I know that she would have been as supportive as I am for speedway’s return to the Island as the Warriors.
“This season I have decided to help out a little by sponsoring an air fence panel and the Warriors will have the Lil Thorburn challenge, which is £250 for any Warrior that officially breaks Smallbrook’s NL track record. It’s going to be an exciting year and I hope that Lil’s challenge will add just a bit of extra incentive to the team.”
Commercial Director Barry Bishop said:
“I am thrilled that Lil will be remembered in this exciting way. Lil’s challenge will give our boys a target to achieve and we cannot wait to see who will be first to knock a tenth off the NL track record. John is a committed Warrior fan already and is as excited as we are about the team and season ahead.
“Congratulations on your wonderful idea John, Lil would have been delighted. Welcome to the Warriors.”
