Carpetright has today (Thursday) announced the proposed closure of 92 stores across the country, but the Isle of Wight’s store looks to be safe.
A list of closures has been published by the national retailer, but the Newport outlet at Gunville Trading Estate is not one of them.
Carpetright is the latest national brand to hit financial trouble but a £60million injection by investors has saved the company.
More than 300 jobs are to be lost as a result of the mass closure of stores.
Wilf Walsh, Carpetright’s chief executive, has said:
“These tough but necessary actions will enable us to address the burden of a legacy UK property estate consisting of too many poorly located stores on unsustainable rents, and are essential if we are to restore our profitability and deliver a successful turnaround.
“We will remain in close contact with all colleagues to keep them fully informed as we move through this process.”
