Newport recovered from a disappointing Saturday to produce several encouraging performances at Ryde Regatta on Sunday.
The Island rowing club endured a frustrating day at Shanklin Regatta on Saturday but responded well 24 hours later in the second half of the weekend’s double-header at Ryde.
The standout performance came from Newport’s Women’s Novice crew of Grace Garner, Julia Coulson, Hannah Turberville, Helen Hopper and cox Fin Gorbutt.
Having seen Southampton win convincingly the previous day, the Newport crew produced a determined display to push their rivals all the way. Just a length behind at the halfway stage, they maintained the pressure throughout the race before crossing the line in an impressive second place.
Newport’s Junior Open crew also performed strongly, finishing 4th in a competitive field of 8 crews.
There was further success for the club in the Junior-Senior race, where Newport once again found themselves battling their long-time rivals from Southampton. Newport reached the turning buoy in front after a strong opening effort, but Southampton gradually edged ahead in the final third of the race to claim victory, leaving Newport to take a well-earned second place.
Despite the disappointment of Saturday’s racing at Shanklin, Newport’s crews showed resilience and determination at Ryde, with several encouraging performances against strong opposition.
