New drone footage has revealed just how close one of Britain’s most scenic drives – Military Road – is to the cliff edge. Fears have been raised that the Isle of Wight’s iconic coastal route may have to be re-routed following a ‘void’ opening up next to it, as previously reported by Island Echo. But an investigation by Island Roads has found there has been ‘no sign’ of highway movement and that there is nothing to suggest it was in danger of imminent collapse. Drone footage captured by Philip Sheath, of the recently-formed action group Save Military Road IOW, shows just how close the cliff edge is to the carriageway. Philip, from Sandown, has said:
“As a motorist you don’t realise how close you are to the edge. It’s only from the air that you can see it. “It’s crazy. I could not believe it. You are one coach width from going into the sea.”
https://youtu.be/-JGfxA7LIdw The Isle of Wight Council has said that its more immediate concerns are with the section of Military Road at Brook. More than £20million is needed to re-route the road inland, which could extend the life of the iconic route for 20 years. A public meeting to discuss the future of Military Road will take place on 11th February at Seely Hall in Brook.

Thats only one place 2 more either side of compton carpark..why did they not show that?????
no point nothing will happen it will close and stay likeit for ever..
So why is this road still safe to drive along yet Ventnor Road isn’t
Good point.
The geology is completely different
Is the erosion coming from land based water erosion of the type undermining the cliffs at Merlin-point/Blackgang (the chines) or just simple sea activity,or a combo of both ? A series of boulders in situ seems a possible option and presumably well south of 20 million nicker ?
I am surprised Captiva Homes are not building cliff top properties.
Does the footage show any new cliff fall at the base? Surely the dark discoloured material a little lower than the split on the footpath shows no new or recent falls? When was drone footage last taken at this point? If you highlight something you will always spot the danger once pointed out surely.
This is so boring is this actually news it’s only a road. I think life will carry on.
It won’t if you’re the poor soul driving over it when it goes!
‘Only a road’?What a sad attitude Bob.
Obviously not boring enough to stop you making a comment.
They walk amongst us.?
This shouldn’t fall down anyway as this was built properly by the military in the war….
By people who knew what they were doing ,without the use of computers.!!!
Fill the void up with the island councillors, it’s about all they are useful for !!!
National trust should be made to give up land on the opposite side for a new road.
It’s been like that for, literally, decades. Look at the colour of the chalk, there have been no recent falls there at all.
The real problem is in the softer cliffs at Compton.
The council should have put some large rocks along the beach below to break the waves and prevent them eating away the toe of the cliff.
Do you really want to believe Island Roads for that information with the state of them resurfacing our roads I don’t think so.
Loads of room. Stop being snow flakes
