Island MP Bob Seely has welcomed a government consultation on banning single use plastics straws, cotton bud stems and stirrers in England.
It is estimated that 8.5 billion plastic straws were thrown away in the UK every year.
Environment Secretary Michael Gove announced the consultation this week.
Speaking about the news, Bob Seely has said:
“This is welcome news and very much moves the Government’s agenda forward on how to tackle plastic pollution in the oceans.
“We have already introduced a charge for plastic bags which has cut use substantially, there is a ban on plastic microbeads and a consultation on introducing a deposit return scheme for drinks containers in England is in hand, so much progress is being made.
“I certainly agree with the Prime Minister when she said plastic waste is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing the world. Nationally and, locally on the Isle of Wight, we need to tackle it and I hope residents contribute to the consultation.”
