The Mayor of Shanklin has recently helped with a spring clean of the town, as well as rectifying criminal damage to public toilets.
Mayor Jon Gilbey and fellow councillor Richard Priest have been painting signage around Shanklin to help refreshan up the local community. They’ve also been helping with some general maintenance after 2 sets of toilets were damaged by vandals.
Sadly, Tower Cottage Gardens toilets had copper piping removed and other substantial vandalism resulting in £4,000 of damage. Falcon Cross toilets had a window smashed alongside other relatively cosmetic vandalism, resulting in both toilets being shut until the buildings were made safe. CCTV cameras were able to clearly identify the vandals at Falcon Cross toilets and the Police are dealing with the matter.
Although Falcon Cross has now re-opened, Tower Cottage Gardens toilets will remain closed until a refit has taken place in the next 4-5 weeks.
Mayor Gilbey has said:
“It is disappointing that a few mindless individuals cause such extensive damage that then impacts on local people and businesses. Hopefully, when the new toilets are completed, there will be reduced opportunities for vandals to cause damage, especially with the addition of further CCTV to all our toilet locations.
Cllr Priest added:
“Shanklin’s Green Towns and other volunteers organised a litter pick. We appreciate how things like this can make a real difference, as well as encourage others to take part”.
