A man in his 70s has sadly died following a fatal motorcycle crash on Military Road yesterday afternoon (Wednesday), Police have confirmed.
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services – including the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance – were called to the scene between Chale and Brighstone at just before 15:30.
It’s understood the motorcycle left the carriageway and came to rest in a ditch, trapping the rider underneath. The incident has been described as a single-vehicle crash.
Police have this afternoon confirmed that despite the best efforts of all involved the man’s life could not be saved and he was declared deceased at the scene.
His family is being supported by specialist officers at this time.
Collision investigators arrived from the mainland at around 17:00 yesterday to conduct a forensic examination of the crash site, with the road closed in both directions.
Several hours into that investigation Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary issued an appeal for information, revealing they believe that another motorcyclist may have been riding just ahead of the motorcycle involved in the collision.
A spokesperson for the Force has said:
“We are keen to identify the motorcyclist riding ahead, as they may have witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it. If this is you, or you have any information that could assist ongoing enquiries surrounding this collision, please contact police on 101 quoting 44230331189.
“You can also submit information to us online here: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report/“.

This is very sad news, but not unexpected given the length of closure and investigating team.
May I offer my condolences to the family and friends.
Accidents happen all too often for multiple reasons, on a motorcycle you are far more vulnerable.
This is the second motorcycle incident this week as well as a number of car incidents. We are all potential victims of such, so do everything you can as individuals on the road to ensure to your best ability YOU are not involved in the next one.
Life is precious, don’t lose yours or another’s because of something that could have been avoided.
RIP Sir.
Very nicely said
Thank you, As an ex-bike rider this strikes a personal note, now as a car driver I see repeatedly the poor standard of driving from SOME not all drivers, only in the last few weeks have had no less than 3 cars driving straight at me having overtaken oncoming vehicles on blind bends, only one was a boy racer, one of the others had a number of children in the car driven by an older driver in thirties. Poor driving crosses the age span.
Road Safety on the Island is very poor, so much needs to be done to make
our Island Roads safe for all to use.
If safety measures were put in place, accidents like these may not happen.
Condolences to all the family.
R.I.P
Road safety on the island is good, not poor.
What safety measures could be put in place on military road.?
Open road with good visibility and a national speed limit.
This was a single vehicle collision, no other vehicles were involved.
Three things could have happened to cause this and it is best not to speculate, rider error, machine failure, or a medical condition.
No safety measures could stop this from happening.
I have seen Motorcycles cycle along the Military Road doing
Wheelies etc over the years.
Also many Motorcycles speed so fast they are nearly on the opposite
of the Road.
Measures need to be taken by Authorities to make the Roads safe
because many persons do what they want on Roads.
I’m so happy you found it useful for your life to do that to your family because it makes it more difficult and you don’t need a place in the family for that stuff anymore I love that I don’t want it but it does not help my mental well and my heart and I know I have a good relationship and I’m very grateful to you and your husband and your husband and I have been through a very tough times together I know you are a lot and you are very special to us and I know you are very lucky to have you and I know you are very happy to be with you and we love and you have many happy days with us but you will never forget you have been together I know you have been with your kids are you have been in your heart is a blessing to you are you have always be
It’s called speeding not the roads.
IT IS CALLED BREAKING THE LAW AND PUTTING OTHER PEOPLE’S LIVES AT RISK
I have travelled the country and I have never seen a place like the Island
NO TRAFFIC RULES
it’s no wonder there are so many accidents.
No one on the Island seems to understand to give way to the right at Roundabouts
and if I had a pound everytime someone went through a Red Light or just comes out
at a Give Way Junction I would be a Millionaire by the end of the year.
YET ALONE ALL THE IDIOTS WHO ARE CLEARLY VISIBLE USING THEIR MOBILE PHONES
IN VEHICLES.
It’s about time the Island enforced some Traffic Laws
Just imagine Sadiq Khan running the Island, he would solve the Law Breaking that
takes places day in and day out.
Cars and bikes don’t generally bring out the best in folks it’s safe to say.I’m not a fan of surveillance at the levels currently being unravelled by the day,but on roads such as the military, they would benefit from either increased traffic patrolling or a couple of Gatsos to take out the ‘joy’ elements of such unatural proclivities as rampant speeding, mostly by over engineered road-rocket motorbikes.
The noise levels that taint the occasional good summers are not exactly enhanced by these cacophanies and that includes those wanna be Douglas Baders filling the skies increasingly. No issues with gliders though.
A long range gatso camera on the military road would soon put a crimp in the anti social elements gunning the engines hither and yon.An open road of that type almost invites excessive speeding amongst the adrenaline crowd, imperelling other users and causing hideous noise disturbances in the process.
Ditto places such as Ryde Esplanade with perennial plague’s of boy racers, day and night, aggressively acelerating for those all important amplified-exhaust-bursts?A few decelerating chicanes wouldn’t be amiss there.’Sleeping-Policemen’ as they were known, not the real ones supposedly policing our thoroughfares, probably doing the real sleeping.
There is No Traffic Law on the Island
Van outside council Houses along Great Preston Road Ryde with NO MOT for 6 months.
BMW damaged / abandoned along Westhill Rd Ryde
Car dumped along Beaper Shute Ryde on L/H side nr Busy Bee R/About
Vehcies park on Double Yellow lines outside Napoleon’s Reach and Sandown Pier
all day long.
Vehicles park on Pavements along Regent St, Shanklin
Vehicles park down Grange Road Shanklin o/s Suvretta House
FCUK ALL GETS DONE ABOUT IT
NO LAW AND ORDER ISLE
So sorry to all the family ride free in heaven sir
A momentary loss of concentration at speed on a road with such stunning views is always going to occur.
What on earth are you drivelling about?
I guessing all of you trolls on here were witnesses to this tragic accident ? Please pass on all you know to the police because you all seem to have seen the speeding and dangerous behaviour etc ? To my understanding nothing has been released so if it was a health issue or vehicle issue and it comes out then you should all rot because karma will come for you, if it ever happens to you i hope people troll your death too for your family to see
Totally agree with you. They seem to forget, in their ranting, that a man has lost his life and his family are grieving that loss. Have some respect for that alone please and keep your crass comments until the cause is known.
Thinking of his family at this awful time
