A young man has died in hospital after an incident in the Solent yesterday evening (Friday) which involved a motor cruiser worth up to £1million and its high-speed RIB tender.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Cowes RNLI lifeboat and Coastguard Rescue 104 helicopter were tasked at around 17:00 after Solent Coastguard were alerted to an incident unfolding off Osborne Bay near East Cowes.
One casualty was airlifted by Coastguard helicopter to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport after being knocked unconscious, however he unfortunately died as a result of his injuries last night. It is understood he suffered serious head injuries from which he could not recover.
Details of how the incident occurred are yet to be confirmed, however this photograph shows how the steering wheel of the water-jet powered RIB has been bent by a heavy impact. It is understood the RIB was involved in a collision, sending at least two people into the water.
Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the Marine Police Unit are investigating the incident, however the incident is not being treated as suspicious. The Maritime Accident Investigation Board have been informed.
The RIB was towed into Cowes following the incident and lifted out of the water.
