A 33-year-old man has been arrested following a public order incident at Calvert’s Hotel in Newport this afternoon (Thursday).
A large number of officers responded to the premises on Quay Street – which is currently being used to house homeless individuals – at 15:48.
It took at least 6 officers to detain and transfer the 33-year-old suspect, from East Cowes, into an awaiting Police van.
A woman was assaulted during the incident but did not sustain any injuries, Police have confirmed.
The suspect remains in custody.

Hardly a wonder that our c. tax rises when having to fund, support and waste such services on those many of whom are not homeless with good reason.
6 cops and 2 medics – must have been some hefty lad!
Said from the comfort of your armchair
I’ve actually lived there age 23 had no home to go to I had my dog kenny I was scared I lived in a tent for months then they helped me and a number of other vulnerable people so from someone that knows I do not think these are a waist of service maybe if t was you or your daughter you might think differently
Very blinkered to the real world arn’t you.
It costs 150 per week including 25 per week per person which goes into the pot and many are homeless with a good reason. If you READ the article the person arrested wasnt even a resisent there judge on do your recycling and judge on
Clear why poll tax is rising, whilst we get even less.
Council tax, dear heart. The Poll Tax was much fairer as every adult had to pay much the same. Not the householder who is being priced out of where she, or he, was born because that person is lower class than the entitled superiority who all want holiday homes which our noble IW cuncil is happy to milk ’em for…
This is how these vile people repay being housed in a hotel, off the streets. They are a burden on society at the tax payers expense. They should appreciate what they are given for free and learn how to behave.
Probably drink/drugs involved?
So an ‘additional’ crime IF so, not an ‘excuse’.
IF they are so poor, clearly they are still getting too much if indulging in such.
A dog mess filled icy gutter is more than many of these deserve. Homeless for a reason, and that reason is ‘usually’ ‘themselves’
Surprised that place is still open for any reason… Awful place!
Another twa_
The attitude towards all homeless people here is utterly disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
I think there is a difference between the unintentionally homeless and those who choose it as a lifestyle, a lot of these people have been offered help to escape the streets yet they refuse it.. Those people are a blight on the tax payer.
Your attitude is naive and clueless. You won’t see the
goodhomeless people in news stories like this. They are staying inside, being respectful and trying to get themselves out of their current situation. The kind you DO see in the news are scum with no respect for anything or anyone.Jon doe, YOU take one into your large home then. You give them the ‘break’ they need. See how you get on, and come back and let us know.
It would be most interesting.
I have actually been homeless, during that time I met a lot of people that were homeless due to job loss, family breakdown etc. Lots of good people down on their luck that were fighting to get back up. The comment’s here are not just insulting the young man in question but some are directed to homeless people in general. So whilst you all sit in your comfy homes, judging all people by the standards of a few, hope that it’s not you that lose your job and end up on the streets because I assure you, its not a nice place to be.
Jon, you clearly read very poorly.
I doubt anyone has a bad ‘attitude’ to “ALL homeless people”
What most, if not all, object to is the massive cost to the public in providing everything for those who by drugs, alcohol, or just because ‘vile’ humans DO exist, are troublesome, violent, selfish, uncaring, nasty EVEN if they were given Buckingham Palace to live in for free.
Those living in seaside homes at Bembridge may well feel those NORMAL people living and struggling to make our way in our homes are a tad ‘harsh’ with our lack of sympathy, but so would you be, when you are doing your best to make ends meet, and see not only the UK’s but the world’s leeches get given MORE than you have, and then are STILL vile and ungrateful.
Depends on how well YOU live to just how much sympathy you can ‘give’.
As someone said, why not take in one of the worst offenders into your loving care, and see IF you still ‘feel the same’.
Surely all this back and forth nonsense about wether homeless are scum ( which they are not)and if it’s council run or wasting tax payers money, blah blah blah. Surely is all irrelevant really, it’s just a story about a man who got arrested in Newport. The end. Don’t think it matters where he does or doesn’t live, so I think everyone needs to just calm down xx
that is the point of a discussion board emma – to exchange views and comment on the subject.
It would appear some folk commenting on this piece of journalism find it easier to criticise the efforts of whom ever is responsible for trying to help certain members of society.
So what if some of them take drugs, so what if some of them spend all day getting drunk?
These people weren’t born alcoholics these people weren’t born drug abusers these people were born like me and you. Seeing others in situations far more difficult than ourselves should make us great full for our own good fortune. Sadly it seems some people just see an opportunity to stick the boot in. “Boo hoo, my council tax is paying for this’. If the people responsible for word salad of this nature have done any research into the funding of this project, I’m Daffy Duck
Surely offering people help in making positive changes in their lives would benefit us all?
Some of the nonsense spouted on this subject is to be honest, not far short of embarrassing.
Any fool can throw endless amounts of ‘other peoples cash’ at any problem, and then IF it is ever ‘sorted’ can claim some sort of victory and ‘vindication’ for the expenditure.
Yet, then ignore, and keep quiet about the vast sums thrown at those who continue to be vile, costly useless beings. It is NOT as though we are running out of people that we even NEED to try to help the clearly useless, nasty addicted violent people.
Whilst they weren’t ‘born’ like it, it is THEY who have chosen that route, so ‘their’ responsible more than anyone else. WE certainly aren’t to blame for their past hard life, many have worse lives and don’t end up vile.
We are saying that spend money on those who really need short term help to sort themselves, but cut it to the bone for those who have tired being helped but still are troublesome low life.
I bet if the cost of trying to turn one violent, drug abusive person fell just on you, or YOU had to live near such places, then it would be a different story.
Clearly trying to explain the intricate complex relationships between the echelons contained within the population of the United Kingdom, is a waste of time when the explanation is directed at Enoch Powell minded Trump supporters.
It’s a bit like playing classical music to a dog.
Cue vile response.
phil
your insulting response is that standard tripe, trotted out by lefty do gooders, who cannot handle the fact that we understand reality and not your delusional view of it.
I’m confused by this response, it makes no sense.
Might I suggest you get a mop for your tears?
easily confused then phil – clearly someone else wrote your other posting then.
well said garlic baby – obviously phil is one of these hand wringing do gooders that lives in a leafy suburb and has never experienced what life is like for innocent people who cannot afford to live further away from the deadbeat scumbag element of the homeless.
perhaps we get a recently released violent criminal, who is homeless and dossing on the streets to live in phils house and see how phil likes it.
after one day of a scumbag like that taking over, eating all his food, drinking his booze, taking drugs in the home, inviting more scumbags in, stealing stuff and making threats, he will be calling the police immediately, demanding that it be removed from his home and his area – guaranteed.
Pfft
The person involved was NOT homeless and did not live at Calverts. Those of you who were so quick to tar homeless people with the same brush should take a look at your own lives. I am dismayed to read so many awful comments about homeless people. GET THE FACTS before making such assumptions.
doesn’t matter – the scumbag element of the homeless need putting down – they are a scourge on society and we do not want to pay for them or deal with them.
Heil Reality, sterilisation too!
Stop the bastards breeding?
yes – or you take them all in at your house phil – you apologist fool
Erm… yourself speaking in defence of such a controversial proposition, the extermination of people without a home, makes you the apologist.
Fool.
stop being such a drip phil
