A fire has caused significant damage to a 1st floor maisonette on Pan Estate in Newport this morning (Wednesday).
4 appliances from Ventnor, Shanklin, East Cowes and Freshwater are on scene at Robin Hood Street, alongside the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Police.
It appears the blaze – the cause of which is unknown at this early stage – has caused smoke and heat damage.
The fire is now out but firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are checking for any hot spots. Positive pressure ventilation is also being used to rid smoke from the property.
2 hose reels and 4 BA have been utilised, alongside short extension ladders.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident at around 06:30 – at the same time that firefighters were already tackling a B&B fire in Quay Street, also in Newport. A neighbour spotted smoke and flames through the window and dialled 999.
In response to the triple 9 call, 2 appliances from Shanklin and East Cowes made up and were remobilised from Quay Street, with Ventnor’s appliance diverted whilst en route to Newport. Freshwater headed directly to Robin Hill Street.
It is understood all persons are accounted for.
UPDATE @ 09:32 – It has been confirmed to Island Echo that the fire involved bedding. However, the flat was empty and no persons have been involved.
Fire investigation officers are set to attend the scene later today to establish the exact cause.
