Fire crews from across the Island are tackling a fire that has broken out at a B&B in the centre of Newport this morning (Wednesday).
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are on scene at Quay Street, where crews are working to extinguish a fire that has caused damage to Newport Quay B&B.
Island Echo understands the fire potentially started in the kitchen of the terraced property.
A total of 6 appliances from Newport, Cowes, Shanklin, Ryde and East Cowes are on scene having been alerted to the blaze at around 04:30.
The Aerial Ladder Platfrom and Incident Command Unit – both from Newport – are also in attendance.
A total of 10 breathing apparatus are in use.
Quay Street is currently blocked to all traffic.
UPDATE @ 06:26 – The fire has been surrounded but the firefighting efforts remain ongoing at this time.
Group Manager Jeff Walls has confirmed to Island Echo that all persons are accounted for but 1 person has been taken to hospital with the effects of smoke inhalation.
Evacuated residents and guests have been given shelter at the nearby Calverts hotel.
UPDATE @ 07:55 – It has been confirmed that the fire started in the kitchen and is believed to have been caused by electrics.
A total of 8 breathing apparatus, 4 hose reels and 1 main jet have been used in the firefighting efforts.
A total of 2 people have been checked over by paramedics, with 1 taken to St Mary’s Hospital.
The incident is now being scaled back, with other Island fire crews attending a residential property fire on nearby Pan Estate.































































































Got to feel sorry for these poor visitors. First, suffering a fire in the B and B, and then suffering a night in Calverts.
Calverts opened their doors and assisted those in need, who would otherwise be left out in the freezing cold! They didn’t have to do that… Also kept the firemen topped up with tea – thank you, Calverts! Let’s hope if your home has a fire your neighbours let Goblins in.
