From today, Islanders should self-isolate if they develop a new continuous cough, fever or a loss or changed sense of normal smell or taste (anosmia).
Anosmia is the loss of or a change in your normal sense of smell. It can also affect your sense of taste as the 2 are closely linked.
The Government say they have been closely monitoring the emerging data and evidence on COVID-19 and, after thorough consideration, they are now confident enough to recommend this new measure.
Households of anyone with symptoms should also self-isolate for 14 days as per the current guidelines and the individual should stay at home for 7 days, or longer if they still have symptoms other than cough or loss of sense of smell.
The NHS COVID-19 app will be updated to reflect this change. In the meantime, app users on the Isle of Wight should continue to use it to report if they have a high temperature or new, continuous cough.

Oh but of course! My knee has swollen slight, maybe that’s a sign? Oh please.
Perhaps you’ve been overdoing the exercise. A sea swim or some solo trampolining is gentler on the knees. Stay safe Mr Justice.
Every year around mid May, from the time that they started growing oilseed rape on the island, I develop itchy eyes, sneezing, an increase in nasal mucous and slight loss in senses of both taste and smell. This year is not as bad as usual. Should I be worried or shall I just add more chillis?
Perhaps carry out some nasal irrigation. I was reading that coronavirus infection in Thailand and other countries ‘may’ be very low because most people practice nasal irrigation every day. I think extra chillis would be nasal irritation.

On a serious note, the first week of lockdown I got what I now believe to be Phantosmia. In my case all I could taste and smell was natural gas. I had a temperature and felt quite ill. The other persons in our house could not until a week later when my partner had the same taste/smell. We called out the gas people and no leak detected. I write this post just out of interest as I wonder if others have had the same symptoms.
At last some POSITIVE news about CV.
At least if stricken I won’t have to taste her awful cooking.
Every cloud……
Serious… I lost my sense of smell back in 2002… Took a year to get back to near normal. Dog farts used to clear the room… to me it smelt of Honey…. Roast chicken smelt disgusting. It’s a very weird sensation… Doctors said my smell would never improve… It did, almost… Only thing I notice now is some perfumes smell of bleach!
Breathing will be a symptom soon! Pathetic!
Yes mrs brown ,can’t people see, they ( liars government) are trying to keep the pressure up , because only 40,000 deaths out of 500,000 predicted doesn’t put enough fear into people, to all want a vaccine. So let’s cover more people with more symptoms.
Odd … this was one of the 5 symptoms that were being talked about months ago, so does that mean in a months time you will have to self isolate if you have joint pains?? They also talked about constant headaches as well months ago, will that also be added to the list? We seem to be playing catch up all the time, same as the app. You may have spread the virus since catching it for 2 to 5 days before you feel ill and report it. Thats five days too late.
