Blackgang Chine has announced the temporary suspension of its weekly firework display following the prolonged period of hot weather and severely dry conditions across the Isle of Wight.
The decision takes effect immediately and will be reviewed on a week-by-week basis, with updates communicated to guests ahead of each Wednesday throughout the summer season.
The announcement comes in the wake of wildfires at Headon Warren this week, which served as a stark reminder of the heightened fire risk currently facing the Island’s landscape and wildlife.
Dan White, General Manager at Blackgang Chine, has said:
“We know how many families look forward to our Wednesday night displays, but with the conditions we’re currently seeing, proceeding with fireworks would be irresponsible, and that’s simply not who we are.
“Blackgang Chine is part of the Island’s landscape and it’s our duty to respect and protect it and its wildlife.
“We want families to come and enjoy a wonderful evening with us, and they still can, Summer Fest continues in full, and will no doubt be a welcome way to cool off in the heat. But we’ll be keeping our skies dark until it’s safe to light them up again.”
In a further gesture of community support, Blackgang Chine has extended an invitation to all Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service personnel to enjoy complimentary entry for themselves and up to four family members at any point during the 2026 season. No booking is required; personnel need only present their ID on arrival.
Dan added:
“The response from our fire service this week has been extraordinary. The work they do deserves to be recognised. This is a small gesture, but it comes with enormous gratitude from everyone at Blackgang Chine.”
