Yarmouth residents are showing stiff opposition to the creation of a Premier Convenience Store in the town.
In recent weeks, works to turn the former Yarmouth Deli premises into a Premier store have begun, much to the dismay of the locals.
Island Echo understands the new owner – who purchased the site in November 2024 – is also the owner of a similar establishment in Totland.
Residents in the area aren’t too keen on the idea though, especially given the fact that the town’s main convenience store, Harvey’s, is located almost directly opposite.
In attempts to make their feelings known, a group of locals gathered on Market Square on Friday afternoon (3rd January) whilst a mainland company was renovating the shopfront. Island Echo understands that a representative from the Isle of Wight Council was also present on that day.
A spanner has been thrown into the works following the news that planning permission to change the shop frontage hasn’t yet been sought – a notion reaffirmed by the apparent lack of any planning or licencing applications on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning portal.
A date as to when the new store is to open hasn’t yet been revealed.
It should have stayed as a Deli.
Yarmouth being one of the most expensive
Seaside towns in England does not need a
Premier Store, it will lower the tone in Yarmouth
and reduce property prices.
The locals who are now moaning had their chance to
buy the property, but choose not too.
It will make money as a Premier Store, unlike the
Deli and it will be much cheaper than Harvey’s who
charge more than most shops in England.
Lower the tone? Have you seen how many drunk drivers fall out of the bugle on a sunday lunchtime, and have done for years,i think the tone is already lowered!
That is very true, it is the no.1 pub for
P*ss Heads, they all sit at the bar because
it keeps them up.
I do hope you are prepared for an understandable response to your actionable allegations, EIE. As for Ohlins46, I hope you are doing your civic duty and informing the police with vehicle details about the drunk drivers you say fall out of the Bugle on Sundays. Or have you like EIE restricted your responsibility to making casually libellous remarks?
That will be good competition for the massively overpriced shop over the road, awwwww the stuck up yarmouth elite are upset, diddums, and by the way kumar has TWO stores in totland, not one.
The island is finally getting diverse, it’s taken
years, but it is finally happening.
Prem shops are everywhere.
And? they are wonderfull there for when you need them..
Anything is better than another empty shop.
Healthy competition never hurts.
Good on you, stand together local residents, just don’t use it!! Watch it sink.
It wont sink, his other two stores will float it,probably better sandwiches too, oooh and a coffee machine
Much cheaper than Harvey’s. I am surprised
they don’t charge an entrance fee to enter
Harvey’s.
It wont sink, his other two stores will float it,probably better sandwiches too, oooh and a coffee machine i wonder why the “deli” closed? Massively overpriced?
What a wanker you are ..it will do very well dont worry about it ..
Oh oh
Nothing wrong with a bit of competition. Harvey’s is nothing more than a posh Nisa anyway, that over price most items. There’s curtain things you can’t get from Harvey’s that I’ll be looking forward to getting from the new shop.
Just what Yarmouth needs, a bright purple, neon lit, purple ‘Premier” store shop front in what is a historic town along with expected associated double parking of white vans buying their Red Bull and cheap sandwiches. (Other colour vans are available)
The snobbery on here is just………hilarious, the salmon trouser brigade are deeply upset
Salmon trousers – Nope, you couldn’t be further from the truth.
I just don’t want what is the attractive and historic look to Yarmouth get ruined.
I would assume though that any shop front change will have to go through planning as well as the change of windows and door that they have already done….
So,the “deli” was attractive AND historic?
snobbery morelike, and not willing to accept change,so i take it you are against the historic kings head being turned into “luxury” accommodation above the overpriced pub?
oh the irony.
utter snobhead..
Maybe the overpriced coffee shops in
Yarmouth will now lower their prices.
Who wants to pay £4 + for a coffee when you
can get one much cheaper in the Premier store.
Too true, why spend £10 on a quality pizza when you can buy a saver pizza from a corner shop for only £1.
Get over yourself im conciderably richer then youuu..
Just don’t use it, one has opened in Regents Street in Shanklin where there was zero need for it. I will NEVER use it, I would rather go without if necessary. In fact I will NEVER us a Premier shop anywhere either on the Island or on the Mainland, they are created by Bookers/franchise which is owned by Tesco, where I would never shop either. 🙂
yep another wanker right there..
Goodness gracious me.
Better than having an empty premises,
doubt if the owners will employ locals though
they will keep it in the family.
Very true, the staff at both totland stores live in accommodation above both shops,he might ship more in,that will please stalin starmer and the wokies, stick a few in the flat above, yarmouth resident nimbys would have heart attacks!
Sad stuck up twats..bet they use it when they need it..
Kumar the new owner from his other two shops does home delivery to vulnerable people, has helped massively to the community, gives employment and development to his staff, so red trousers doing a fine NIMBY please allow people a choice of where they wish to shop…..
We are always being told that competition is a good thing
I don’t mind a Premier shop, but the frontage must be in keeping with a conservation area. What I do miss is the delicious baguettes and pasties. A cellophane-wrapped Ginsters won’t be the same.
