Local PE teacher Ian Rock completed a gruelling 73-mile walk around the coast of the Isle of Wight over the weekend, all in aid of the Huntingdon’s Disease Association (HDA) – a cause close to his heart. Ian set off from Ryde Pier at around 07:00 on Saturday (18th May) before returning – having walked the entirety of the Island’s coast – some 29 hours later at around 13:00 on Sunday (19th May). Cheered on by family and friends along the way, Ian completed a total of 136,718 steps and burnt a total of 6,308 calories during his epic 73-mile route. A teacher at Carisbrooke College, Medina College and the Island VI Form, Mr Rock – as he is known to his students – was diagnosed himself with Huntingdon’s back in November 2023. Huntington’s disease is a condition that damages nerve cells in the brain causing them to stop working properly. It’s passed on from a person’s parents and sees the condition of the brain deteriorate over time. Those keeping tabs were treated to regular updates on Ian’s Facebook page. Upon finishing the walk, more than 3 times the length of Walk The Wight, Ian said:
“My feet are very sore but thanks to everybody for your support, I really appreciate it. “I’m now gonna go home and have a beer”
So far a total of £2,985 has been raised. Anyone wishing to donate to the JustGiving page can do so here.
