Isle of Wight duo Kevin Read and Rory Day are set to take on the London Marathon in aid of a local charity dedicated to improving access to defibrillators across the community.
Kev, who works at HMP Isle of Wight, and his nephew Rory Day, who works at St Mary’s Hospital, will be running the marathon to raise funds for IOW Defibrillators.
The charity was founded by Kevin’s father, Steve, following his own cardiac arrest several years ago, when a defibrillator was used to save his life. This experience led to the creation of the organisation, which focuses on increasing the availability of public access defibrillators across the Isle of Wight.
Through fundraising events and sponsorship, the charity has installed more than 80 defibrillators in communities across the Isle of Wight.
Kev and Rory are now aiming to raise enough money through their marathon challenge next month to fund at least 1 or 2 additional devices.
Speaking to Island Echo, Kev has said:
“Running the London Marathon is a huge challenge for us, but it means a lot to support a charity so close to our family.
“It shows how important defibrillators are and how they can save lives.”
