A section of bank has slid onto the main through road in Wroxall tonight (Wednesday) – leaving the carriageway partially blocked.
Around a 3m high, near vertical bank that borders St John’s Road has shifted following excessive rainfall that’s been experienced across the Island over the past few days.
A picket fence which separates a resident’s home from the drop to the road below has also given way.
The landslide occurred around 40 meters north of the junction of Appuldurcombe Road.
St John’s Road, at the time of publishing, remains open to traffic under give and take, however, traffic management arrangements are expected to be put in place before the morning.
Island Echo has been informed by Mark Smith, a resident and onlooker, that nobody has been injured and everyone is safe and well.
Island Roads have been made aware of the situation having been alerted to the landslide at 22:20 – they are expected to attend the site shorty.
UPDATE @ 23:15 – Island Roads operatives are now on scene.

No worries, the Island struggles when it pours down! but they are always wanting to
Build more properties.
What is needed is a digger to remove 4 foot of soil and gabion cages to be placed at road level and to continue higher. Water drains through these easily and the weight of them holds back the soil.
Wildlife love them and plants grow naturally amongst them.
Cheap easy and moveable should the need arise.
We have had our border enhanced by them along Foreland road and they look attractive imo.
Once again, the ‘female’ driver of the vehicle ‘panicked’… but doesn’t say when the ‘pr**t of a male driver in a lorry who was driving too fast’, does it..
What are you on about?
To clarify my comment above, I’m referring to the terminology used here which is reinforcing stereotypes. Always one sided.
Actually nobody understands a word you are saying and don’t care
Odd. I get it!
wrong post I think… Focus floooded out by lorry atdownend/tip LOL
The trouble with living in Wroxall is it is protected by the downs which creates a huge volume of surplus water running down in heavy rain.
